Moringa is a light feeder — it grows even in poor soils. But a little timely nutrition turns an average tree into a heavy pod-bearing one. This calendar keeps it simple.
At planting: feed the pit
Mix 10–15 kg of well-rotted farmyard manure or compost into each planting pit along with the topsoil. This one step feeds the young tree for its first few months. Avoid fresh dung — it burns young roots.
First 3 months: light and steady
During fast vegetative growth, give small monthly doses of a balanced fertilizer around the plant, a few inches away from the stem. Always water after applying fertilizer. A soil test from your nearest agriculture office is the cheapest way to know exactly what your land lacks.
Flowering & pod stage: support the crop
When buds appear, the tree needs extra energy for pods. A dose rich in potash at flowering improves pod setting and pod quality. Continue farmyard manure once a year — organic matter keeps the soil alive.
Watering schedule
- First month: light watering daily (nursery) or every 2 days (field).
- Months 2–6: twice a week in dry weather; skip after good rain.
- Established trees: surprisingly drought-tolerant — water only in long dry spells. Drip irrigation is ideal if you have it.
- Golden rule: moringa hates standing water more than it hates dry soil. Never let water stagnate around the stem.
Quick month-by-month rhythm
- Planting month: FYM in pit + first watering.
- Vegetative months: light fertilizer + regular weeding.
- Flowering: potash-rich dose + steady moisture.
- After harvest: prune, add compost, let the tree rest.
